Archaeological fieldwork in gardens immediately south of the surviving ruins produced medieval and modern pottery whose dates do not predate the late ninth century, indicating the site was in use by that time. The presence of such material places the castle within a medieval sequence of occupation that reaches back at least to the early Middle Ages.
The castle and its surrounding lands appear in written records in 1253, when the place and its territory are documented and noted for their strong strategic position overlooking the Llobregat valley and the plain of Casserres. That description records the importance of the site for controlling the river corridor and adjacent lowlands during the medieval period.
At a later stage the principal tower was adapted to carry a late bell, transforming part of the military structure into a support for a bell installation. Over time the remains became integrated into the town fabric and were incorporated into a building locally known as the “Prisión,” which stands annexed to the town hall and is reached by turning right after crossing the bridge over the Llobregat. The castle is listed in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia and is protected as a Cultural Asset of National Interest.
The castle occupies the upper section of the town and sits on the tip of a rocky outcrop that separates the old settlement from the Llobregat river. The surviving fabric is concentrated where the defensive circuit met the cliff edge, and the visible remains are characteristic of a fortified site reworked through time rather than a single, intact plan.
Extensive sections of battered wall survive, their sloping bases suggesting construction intended to strengthen the lower courses against erosion or attack. One prominent stretch of wall, which founded the former castle at the river edge, rises above the town and remains a noticeable element of the defensive system. These wall fragments now stand in a very precarious state but still mark the original line of fortification.
A square-plan tower is preserved among the ruins. Originally part of the castle’s defensive ensemble, the tower was later reused to support a bell, so that a bell installation sits atop or within its structure in a later phase. The tower and adjoining masonry have been incorporated into a later building known locally as the “Prisión,” which is attached to the town hall. Access to this complex is obtained by turning right after crossing the bridge over the Llobregat.
Archaeological prospection carried out immediately to the south of the visible remains recovered medieval and modern pottery with a chronology starting no earlier than the late ninth century. Those finds attest to occupation or activity in the area from that date onward and relate directly to the archaeological footprint around the standing walls and tower.
