Castello Rufo Ruffo stands in the municipality of Scaletta Zanclea, Italy, and was built under the direction of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II of Swabia during the early 13th century. This fortification emerged within the political and military landscape shaped by the Hohenstaufen dynasty’s influence in Sicily.

The castle’s origins date back to 1220 when Frederick II ordered its construction to serve both defensive purposes and as a noble dwelling. Its location on a strategic hill above the medieval settlement of Scaletta Zanclea provided a commanding view over the surrounding area, reinforcing its role as a stronghold. Frederick II entrusted the castle’s management to Matteo Selvaggio, whose family lineage would later include the notable Baroness Macalda, believed to have been born within the castle walls around 1240.

Over the centuries, the Castello Rufo Ruffo passed through the hands of several noble families, reflecting the changing dynamics of territorial control and aristocratic inheritance typical of the period. In the 20th century, the castle entered a new phase when Prince Sigerio Ruffo of Scaletta gifted it to the local municipal authorities in 1969. Following this transition, the castle underwent restoration aimed at preserving its structural integrity and historical presence.

Condition

The castle is situated atop a hill, overlooking what was once the medieval village below, and showcases the characteristics of a fortification erected in the early 1200s. Though detailed records of its architectural plan and construction features are limited, the remaining structure maintains the essential components of a medieval fortress combined with residential spaces for nobility.

Constructed originally to withstand military threats, the castle’s enduring stonework reveals a solid foundation typical of defensive buildings of its time. The materials used would have included local stone quarried and shaped to form protective walls meant to resist siege engines and attacks. Although no decorative carvings, inscriptions, or archaeological artifacts have been documented in the castle, its preservation allows for an appreciation of medieval construction techniques through its robust walls and elevated position.

Following the donation to the municipality in the late 1960s, restoration work was carried out to stabilize the ruins and make the site accessible while maintaining its historical authenticity. These efforts have ensured that the castle’s outline and structural remain visible, offering insight into its dual role as both a fortified refuge and a noble residence in medieval Sicily.
