Quick summary
Castle of Badón is a castle in Spain with origins associated with the 20th century.
See all castles in SpainThe Castle of Badón rises above the municipality of Fayón in Spain. After the area was retaken by Alfonso I the Battler, the settlement of Fayón was granted as an honor regalis to Pedro de Biota. At a later point the site passed into the hands of the Moncada family, who carried out rebuilding work on the hilltop stronghold between the twelfth and the fourteenth centuries to control riverborne commerce on the Ebro, particularly the movement of wheat toward Catalonia. The fortress is therefore commonly described as a fourteenth-century stronghold that developed from these medieval interventions.
In the seventeenth century the castle formed part of the possessions of the marquis of Aytona. The structure underwent changes in the nineteenth century during the Carlist Wars, when alterations were made for contemporary military use. The site was officially recorded as an archaeological zone under the heritage protection regime established by Law 3/1999, with that designation published in the Boletín Oficial de Aragón on 22 May 2006.
The surviving arrangement is compact and follows the rocky topography of its hilltop setting within the Riba-roja reservoir area beside the Ebro corridor. Construction was carried out in fairly irregular rubble masonry, producing a small fortification whose plan and fabric respond to the promontory on which it stands.
What remains on the ground today centers on the foundation of a rectangular tower, preserved at the level of its base, and the fragments of an enclosing defensive wall that once surrounded it. These elements belong to the medieval phase of the site’s occupation and reflect the rebuilding activity carried out by the Moncada family between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. The tower base survives in situ as a raised arranque, while sections of the perimeter wall enclose the immediate summit.
The walling is built from uneven rubble bonded in place and has been altered in later times. Numerous small gun ports were cut into the curtain during the nineteenth century, reflecting the field modifications made for the Carlist Wars. Overall the remains are fragmentary but legible on the landscape, standing as the archaeological footprint of the castle’s medieval plan and its nineteenth-century reuse.
