Quick summary
Wallburg Sieben Gräben is a castle in Germany with origins associated with the 13th century.
See all castles in GermanyWallburg Sieben Gräben stands in Hagen, Germany, and was a medieval fortification occupied during the Middle Ages.
Ceramic evidence places the site’s use from the late 1100s into the 1400s. This chronology frames the fortification as a medieval installation contemporary with the building of the nearby Hohenlimburg, which was erected in 1230. A written notice from 1243 refers to an older fortification beside Hohenlimburg, and Wallburg Sieben Gräben is regarded as a likely predecessor to that castle.
The site saw renewed military use in later medieval territorial struggles. It was apparently reused during conflicts involving the Counts von der Mark, the County of Limburg and the Archbishopric of Cologne. Contemporary interpretation holds that the Counts von der Mark probably established the site to act as a counter-castle against Hohenlimburg.
Archaeological work inside the enclosure was carried out in 1908. The location has been recorded as a Hagener archaeological monument since 9 December 1991 and lies within the Stoppelberg landscape protection area west of Nahmer.
The fortification is arranged as a ring of three consecutive earth banks and ditches encircling an interior roughly 21 metres across. On its northern side an additional defensive cut protects the approach, forming a narrow defended neck between the interior and the surrounding ground.
Excavations conducted in 1908 exposed a stone ring wall within the interior and the foundations of a square structure interpreted as a tower. Reports from that work also noted that the outer ramparts were formed as earthen banks and were not faced or strengthened with masonry.
Today the monument is recorded and protected as an archaeological site and lies inside the Stoppelberg landscape protection area. The earthwork banks, the northern approach ditch and the interior foundations remain the documented physical features identified by investigation.
