Adare Desmond Castle in Adare, County Limerick, was erected by the Anglo-Norman FitzGerald family on a riverside site long associated with Gaelic occupation. Local tradition and an early Irish chronicle record a late 12th-century O’Donovan stronghold at this point; that circular Gaelic fort stood until the FitzGeralds of the Kildare branch took control and established the stone castle recorded in 1226.

In the early 1200s the complex acquired its main domestic range, including a large hall with window openings and adjacent service rooms such as a bakery and kitchen, which show organized household provision. The site later became linked with the Earls of Desmond and for long periods was held with the estates of the Earls of Dunraven. Three monasteries were founded nearby and the settlement grew as a trading place, with the castle positioned to oversee river traffic on the Maigue. From the late 20th century substantial conservation has been carried out, notably from 1996, and much of the FitzGerald stone fabric survives today.

Condition

The castle stands on the north bank of the River Maigue beside the bridge near road No. 21. Its plan centers on a roughly square defensive core within a surrounding moat, reflecting the early 13th-century FitzGerald building phase.

Within the enclosure the principal surviving feature is the large early 1200s hall, notable for its window openings, with a bakery and kitchen arranged to serve it. The riverside setting and nearby monastic foundations form part of the site’s archaeological context. The medieval fabric has been consolidated by modern restoration, so much of the plan and the principal rooms remain visible today.
