See all castles in SpainThe Castle of Mota del Marqués is situated in the municipality of Mota del Marqués, Spain. It was erected during the 13th century under the reign of Alfonso X, known as Alfonso the Wise, a ruler of the Kingdom of Castile. The castle’s origins lie in a period when military fortifications were vital for controlling territory and defending against external threats.
Initially, the castle belonged to the Teutonic Order, a medieval military and religious group with roots in the Crusades. Their ownership indicates the castle served both defensive and religious-military functions, reflecting the dual nature common to many fortifications managed by such orders during the Middle Ages. The strategic location on a hill allowed the castle to oversee the surrounding settlement, providing an advantageous point for monitoring and defense.
Over time, the castle faced significant challenges. In 1520, during the Revolt of the Comuneros, an uprising of Castilian citizens against royal authority, the stronghold was assaulted. This conflict marked a pivotal moment in its history, contributing to damage and weakening of the structure. Several centuries later, in 1810, French forces attacked the castle amid the Peninsular War, known locally as the Spanish War of Independence against Napoleonic France. These successive assaults played a major role in the castle’s gradual decline.
Following these military confrontations, the castle fell into further disrepair, with much of its original fabric lost. Only the central tower, known as the keep or tower of homage, remains standing today. The property eventually came into the hands of the Hormias family, who were former residents of Mota del Marqués and retain private ownership.
In response to concerns about the castle’s deteriorating condition, emergency conservation efforts were conducted in July 2010 by the regional government, the Junta de Castilla y León, aiming to prevent the tower from collapsing. Despite these urgent measures, no full-scale restoration has taken place since. As of 2021, the tower remains structurally unstable and continues to face the threat of collapse, underscoring its fragile state more than seven centuries after it was built.
The surviving remains of the Castle of Mota del Marqués are limited primarily to the vaulted tower of homage, which served as the main keep and last line of defense within the castle complex. This central tower, constructed in the 13th century, reflects medieval military architecture focused on strong, vertical structures designed to provide refuge and command over the surrounding terrain.
Built atop a prominent mound, the tower’s position emphasized its defensive role, dominating the adjacent town both physically and strategically. The retainment of vaulted ceilings within the tower points to a construction style aimed at enhancing structural strength. Although the tower once formed part of a larger fortification, today it stands largely isolated, supported by scaffolding both inside and outside to prevent further deterioration.
The materials used in the keep’s construction are not detailed, but the visible condition and the presence of broken light fixtures and neglected scaffolding indicate ongoing vulnerability and a lack of comprehensive upkeep since the emergency intervention in 2010. The temporary supports suggest continuous attempts to maintain structural integrity without having restored the tower fully.
Despite the precariousness of the surviving element, the tower remains an important archaeological vestige that illustrates the castle’s original scale and strategic design. Photographic records show the tower’s exterior and the internal shoring measures, revealing the state of urgent preservation rather than restoration. These interventions, while preventing immediate collapse, highlight the critical need for further conservation to safeguard what remains of this medieval fortification.
