Château de Châtillon-sur-Lison, in Châtillon-sur-Lison, France, was established in the Middle Ages by medieval builders.

A fortified presence at this site is recorded from the twelfth century, while the castle’s current placement on the hill dates from the thirteenth century. The estate and the castle lent their name to a local lineage, the family known as Maison de Châtillon, a line that later became extinct.

In the fifteenth century ownership passed into the hands of the de Montagu family through Ottonin de Montagu. Subsequent centuries saw the château altered and maintained: work to improve and restore the buildings is documented in the sixteenth century and again in the eighteenth century. The principal dwelling and specific domestic buildings received formal protection when they were listed as French historical monuments on 4 December 2002.

Condition

The château crowns a witness hill that looks over the valleys of the Loue and the Lison, their junction lying about 900 meters to the north. Trees rise around the site, yet the group of buildings remains visible from the village of Lizine and along the road toward Cussey-sur-Lison, giving a clear sense of its commanding position in the landscape.

The main residence is set out in a curved plan, formed as an arc with a central tower projecting from its face and a returning wing on the west side. The enclosed court is arranged on two distinct levels, and a service courtyard sits to the north of the principal dwelling, indicating a clear separation between household functions and the main living quarters.

Inside the principal building several rooms retain original hearths and substantial timber wall panelling. Three chambers are singled out for their late eighteenth-century decorative treatment in the Louis XVI manner, reflecting the documented refurbishment phase in that century. The principal dwelling and certain outbuildings were recognised for their historic value when they were entered on the French list of protected monuments on 4 December 2002.
