Château de la Mothe stands in Saint-Privat-des-Prés, France, and originated under the medieval feudal system of the region. Its earliest documentary mentions fall in the first quarter of the fifteenth century, when the place was recorded as a fief dependent on the seigneury of Ribérac.

In the medieval period the site functioned as a fortified dwelling beside a watercourse and served as a refuge during local wars. Contemporary descriptions identify it as a fortified house used for shelter in times of conflict. This defensive character is reflected in accounts of military activity there during later religious fighting.

During the Wars of Religion the governor of Aquitaine, Montluc, notes stopping at the site with troops while conducting a Catholic offensive in the Aubeterre area. That episode places the château within the campaign movements of those wars and records its use by armed forces in that struggle.

The medieval stronghold underwent a major rebuilding in the seventeenth century, a transformation so extensive that the present building dates to that period. Ownership over time passed through several local families, recorded successively as Arlot, Belhade, La Cropte and Signac. In the twenty-first century the park around the château entered a phase of rehabilitation in 2010, and the main house together with its dependencies have been adapted for use as holiday accommodations.

Condition

The site occupies a rectangular raised platform with a three-storey central house flanked by two side pavilions, a layout that reflects the seventeenth-century reconstruction that produced the present main building. The pavilions are covered by hipped roofs clad in flat tiles, and the principal dwelling retains its vertical emphasis with three distinct levels.

The château is encircled by moats that are spanned by a bridge, the water-filled defensive circuit and crossing being prominent elements of the ensemble. Agricultural ranges stand on either side of the courtyard but these service buildings have been heavily altered from their earlier forms. The park contains a natural cave that has been adapted for use within the landscaped grounds.

Overall the main building and its immediate surroundings show the footprint and materials of the later rebuilding, the moats and bridge remain as visible landscape features, the courtyard outbuildings exhibit extensive modification, and the adapted cave survives within the park. The site is recorded at coordinates 45.23083°N, 0.20000°E.
