Château des Bordeaux, in Les Bordeaux, Amné, France, was built by members of the French nobility.

A chapel connected with the estate dates back to 1699, indicating an established religious presence on the grounds before the current residence. In the mid-1700s André du Bois, marquis de Courceriers, undertook a major rebuilding of the estate, replacing the earlier château on the Bordeaux property with a new house in a classical manner. Construction of the principal residence began during this period under his direction.

Following the death of the marquis the house fell into serious disrepair. In 1965 the domain passed to M. Manoury, who initiated work to restore the building. Later, on 28 December 1984, portions of the site received formal protection as a listed historic monument; the legal designation covered the main façades and roofs, the service and farm ranges, the porter’s lodge, the principal internal staircase with its wrought-iron balustrade, and the surrounding moats.

Condition

The house presents a balanced, classical composition organized around a single, main dwelling block. That principal block is ended by a pavilion at each extremity, with those pavilions extending more prominently toward the front than to the rear. The central line of the main front is emphasized by a projecting central bay capped by a triangular pediment and a large pavilion roof built with a steep lower slope and shallower upper slope, commonly described as a mansard roof.

Low service buildings frame the principal block and return at right angles to form a courtyard of honor. Within the left-hand range of these outbuildings stands the chapel, whose foundation is dated 1699, attesting to its earlier origin relative to the mid-18th-century main house. The outbuildings and chapel remain associated with the château complex and were explicitly recorded when parts of the estate were given heritage protection.

Several architectural elements are formally documented and protected. The exterior façades and roof coverings of the residence were included in the 1984 listing, as were the ranges used for commons and farm activities and the porter’s lodge that marks the approach. Inside, the principal staircase is singled out for its wrought-iron railing, and the defensive or ornamental water-filled moats around the house are recorded as part of the protected ensemble. After a period of decay following the original builder’s death, restoration work began under M. Manoury in 1965 and these conserved components were later recognized through the historic monument designation.
