The Castle of the Princes de Mérode is situated in Westerlo, a town in the province of Antwerp, Belgium. The site has been occupied since at least the late 14th century, when the lords of Wesemael constructed the central keep, or donjon, likely replacing an earlier fortress. This early medieval stronghold formed the core of the castle complex.

In 1484, the castle came into the possession of the House of Merode, a noble family that has continuously resided there for over five centuries. During the 15th and 16th centuries, the castle expanded with additional buildings, reflecting the evolving needs of its inhabitants. From the 16th century onward, the castle gradually shifted from a defensive fortress to a more comfortable and luxurious noble residence, reducing its military function.

The early 18th century saw the creation of a large formal French-style park across the Nete river, commissioned by Fieldmarshall Jean-Philippe-Eugène de Mérode-Westerloo. This addition enhanced the estate’s grandeur and reflected contemporary landscape design trends. In the 19th century, the castle underwent restorations that emphasized a romantic medieval style, including neo-Gothic decoration of interiors such as the knight’s hall and private chapel.

Throughout its history, the castle has remained inhabited by the Merode family. It has also served as a venue for cultural events and celebrations, maintaining its role as a noble residence and local landmark.

Condition

The castle complex centers on a late 14th-century donjon built by the lords of Wesemael. This keep is constructed from local brown stone with walls approximately 2.75 meters thick, designed for defense. Surrounding structures date from the 15th and 16th centuries, reflecting the castle’s expansion and adaptation over time.

Inside, the castle features richly decorated rooms, including salons adorned with 18th-century Córdoba leather wall hangings. The knight’s hall and private chapel were redecorated in the 19th century with neo-Gothic elements, adding to the castle’s romantic medieval atmosphere.

The castle is set within a 12-hectare English landscape park, which includes ponds connected to the original moat. These water features contribute both to the site’s historic defensive system and its aesthetic appeal. Across the Nete river lies a larger, 60-hectare formal French-style park with a rectangular pond designed to create a grand visual perspective, dating from the early 1700s.

Modern updates include a geothermal heating system that uses the surrounding ponds as a heat source, integrating contemporary technology while preserving the historic environment. The castle remains well-preserved and inhabited, with restorations maintaining its structural and decorative heritage.
